The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is advancing work on the Mombasa–Mariakani Highway Project, a flagship upgrade of the A8 corridor. The project transforms the Mombasa–Kwa Jomvu–Mariakani section into a modern dual carriageway, designed to decongest Mombasa, improve access to the Port of Mombasa, and enhance regional trade along the Northern Corridor, a vital artery for cargo moving to and from the hinterland.
The upgrade includes new bridges, footpaths, drainage systems, and comprehensive road safety features. Implementation is underway in two sections. Lot 1 (Mombasa–Kwa Jomvu) spans 11.4 km and has been upgraded to a four- to six-lane highway, with most works complete. Lot 2 (Kwa Jomvu–Mariakani) covers 30.4 km, being developed as a durable dual carriageway designed to handle high traffic volumes and heavy port trailers.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting construction with traffic management, community engagement, and coordination with transport operators. According to Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, these efforts help maintain uninterrupted cargo flow, minimize disruptions to businesses and residents, and ensure the upgraded highway fulfills its role as a critical trade and logistics corridor for Kenya and the wider region.
