A building has collapsed along Yusuf Haji Avenue, on 9th Street in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area, prompting an emergency response by the Kenya Red Cross.
In a post on social media, the Kenya Red Cross said its response teams were heading to the scene and urged members of the public to keep away from the area to allow emergency personnel to operate safely.
Footage circulating on social media shows the structure crumbling to the ground, sending a massive cloud of dust into the air as debris crashes down. The building is reported to have been 13 storeys high, although this detail has not been independently confirmed.
The number of people affected by the collapse, including possible casualties, was not immediately known. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the cause of the collapse, were also unclear at the time of publication.
Building collapses have repeatedly raised concerns about construction safety in Kenya, prompting scrutiny of compliance with building regulations and standards, professional oversight and the quality of construction work. Investigations will be necessary to establish what led to the Eastleigh incident.
