East Africa Portland Cement has reopened its Athi River plant after completing a Ksh 400m upgrade. The plant was closed in March to facilitate the upgrade.
According to Board Chairman Riichard Mbithi, the factory has resumed full production with a capacity to produce one million metric tonnes of cement annually by 2026.
“With the finalization of the plant refurbishment and the resultant improved production and efficiency, we are confident that the company will meet production and revenue targets”, said Mr Mbithi.
The upgrade involved, among others, the replacement of bag filters and refractory bricks. The grate cooler system was also refurbished.
Several local contractors took part in the upgrade.
