Charles Hinga’s Return to Housing Docket Signals Performance Approval

Charles Hinga Mwaura, who served as Principal Secretary, State Department for Housing and Urban Development in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, is back in the same docket. The amiable technocrat, who was highly visible in the previous government’s affordable housing initiatives and the now defunct Kazi Mtaani project was nominated by President William Ruto this week.

Hinga’s nomination is seen as a recognition of his abilities, hard work and ability to work smoothly with stakeholders. Like his fellow nominees, Hinga’s fate is now in the hands of the relevant parliamentary committees. He is however not expected to face obstacles.

The nominee is passionate about housing and has been a strong advocate of affordable housing for Kenyans.

“Article 43 of the Constitution states that every Kenyan has a right to decent housing and adequate basic sanitation,” said the PS at one of his many public appearances.

The previous government headhunted Hinga from South Africa where he had been helping public agencies to implement landmark mega-infrastructure projects in urban areas via public-private partnerships.
