Concerns Mount over Quality of the New Ngong–Suswa Road

Ngong Suswa

Concerns are mounting over the safety and quality of the newly completed Ngong–Suswa road, just months after the government announced its completion.

Initially hailed as a much-needed alternative to the congested Mai Mahiu–Narok route, the road was expected to improve connectivity to Narok, Bomet and the wider South Nyanza region. Many motorists had already begun using it to bypass the perennial traffic snarl-ups along the escarpment corridor.

However, users are now raising red flags. Sections of the road are reportedly showing signs of premature wear, prompting questions about construction standards and oversight. Drivers have also cited a lack of essential road furniture, including clear signage and lane markings, making the route difficult to navigate, especially for first-time users.

Safety concerns are particularly acute along several sharp bends, where the absence of warning signs and guardrails has left motorists exposed. The situation is compounded at night and during poor weather, when visibility is reduced.

Transport stakeholders warn that without prompt remedial action, the road risks becoming a safety hazard rather than the reliable alternative it was intended to be. They are calling for an urgent inspection, installation of proper signage, and corrective works to address emerging defects.

The Ngong–Suswa road, once seen as a solution to a long-standing transport bottleneck, is now under scrutiny as questions grow over whether it was delivered to the required standards.
