Countdown to IEK Convention as Registration Deadline Nears

This year’s Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) international convention takes place at the Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort & Spa, Mombasa, between 25^th and 28^th November. Registration closes on 10^th November.

The convention has both in-person and virtual attendance options.

The convention comes amid various challenges facing the engineering fraternity in the country, including limited opportunities for qualified professionals. Earlier in the year, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) took the unprecedented step of organizing a peaceful march on August 27 to highlight the plight of its members. The procession, held under the theme “Employment for 10,000 Engineers,” brought together hundreds of engineers who walked from the IEK headquarters to government offices to present their petition.

They decried the continued exclusion of local engineers from major infrastructure projects, claiming that foreign firms often dominate such opportunities despite the availability of skilled Kenyan professionals. The petition also called for the creation of new engineering positions in critical sectors such as roads, energy, water, housing, and transport, emphasizing that Kenya’s development goals cannot be achieved without empowering its own engineers.

The march marked a turning point for the profession—signaling a collective resolve to demand fair recognition, equitable job allocation, and stronger enforcement of local content policies.
