The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the Mai Mahiu-Narok Road would be opened on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

This comes after the road was closed on Sunday, April 30, 2023, due to flooding that damaged a section of it.

Officials from the Ministry of Transport ordered the road to be closed for public safety and to allow for an expedition of restoration work.

The Mai Mahiu-Narok Highway developed deep cracks, making the road dangerous for motorists. This happened 6 kilometres from Mai Mahiu Town to Narok.

According to a statement issued by KeNHA, the closure was caused by the discovery of a severe crack six kilometres from Mai Mahiu town towards Narok.

The crack, according to KeNHA, cuts across the road, making it dangerous for motorists to use.

KeNHA could not establish the cause of the crack has not been established through preliminary reports attributed it to the ongoing rains.

The restoration work commenced immediately after an outcry by the commuters who spent hours on the road and looking for alternatives to reach their destination.

Officials from the Ministry of Roads and Transport, led by the Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, and KeNHA Director General, Eng. Kungu Ndungu assured the public that the road would be fully restored by Today, May 2, 2023.

The area has in the past been affected by similar earth movements.
