Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) says the dualling of the Eastern bypass that connects Mombasa Road with Thika Highway through Utawala is 72 percent complete.
“Motorists will soon be able to drive from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Thika Road via Utawala in less than 40 minutes”, said the state agency.
The road, designed during the Grand Coalition Government back in 2013 was expected to significantly improve the flow of traffic in Nairobi by diverting traffic from the city and also help residents in adjacent areas commute faster. But it eventually posed a problem with constant nightmarish traffic and accidents from reckless motorists reported frequently. A decision was reached to carry out the dualling.
“They should not have done that road without dualling it,” Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia was at one point quoted as saying.
