President William Ruto has lifted the 12-floor cap on Eastleigh buildings and has given developers leeway to go up to 30 storeys.

The president this would see more people accommodated in decent housing. He was addressing Mathare residents who have been affected by the ongoing floods.

“Since I am the Commander in Chief, I have said that in Eastleigh, you couldn’t build a house beyond 12 floors but now we can build storey buildings of up to 30 floors so that citizens can get accommodation and live in a harmonious neighbourhood,” he stated.

The President promised the residents help from the Government saying each displaced household would receive Ksh. 10,000 to enable them look for alternative accommodation “as the government figures out a long-term strategy”.

He instructed Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, who had accompanied the head of state, to immediately advertise tender for construction of 20,000 affordable houses in the area.

“You will pay Ksh 3,000 per month and live in a decent house with water, toilet and other amenities,” he promised the residents.
