The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) have attributed the collapse of a section of Vihiga morgue to failure by county governments to engage professionals to oversee their building projects.
In a statement, the two bodies noted that in February, a similar incident happened at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu where a section of slab of a ward under construction caved in.
“These incidents indicate a pattern of poor construction work in counties. Our own findings are that counties have not engaged qualified and registered engineers to design and supervise building structures in compliance with the law and the building code”, read the statement in part. “Indeed some counties do not have a single registered structural engineer in their employment.”
Part of a morgue under construction close to the Vihiga County Referral Hospital in Mbale Town collapsed last Sunday, killing one and injuring 11 others.
