Last week, a brief statement from The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) Board announced the exit of Eng. John Mativo from the company that he had led since 2023.
Eng. Mativo is widely regarded as a diligent and principled professional with a deep understanding of the energy transmission sector. Throughout his tenure, he was praised for his technical competence, strategic focus and collaborative leadership style.
Known for his accessibility and willingness to engage with the public and industry peers, Eng. Mativo stood out as a public servant who valued transparency and accountability. His contributions to the expansion and modernization of Kenya’s power transmission infrastructure earned him respect both within KETRACO and across the engineering and energy fraternity.
Eng. Mativo holds a Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering from Tokyo Metropolitan University (Japan), a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from Tongji University (China), and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi.
His parting shot: “It’s been a great pleasure speaking of my experience and vision to expand the high voltage grid that will ensure Kenya and region has reliable and adequate power for the present needs and future needs. A grid that ensures Kenyans access cheaper green energy. For God and Country”.
In the same statement, the Board announced the appointment of Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as the Acting Managing Director and CEO. Eng. Kibias is a seasoned engineer and long-serving member of the KETRACO leadership team. The Board did not provide details on why Eng. Mativo was eased out.
