The first 1000 units of more than 1500 planned in the Pangani area redevelopment programme will be ready by the end of 2021. The houses are part of the ongoing efforts by the Kenya Government, various county governments and private sector players to provide affordable housing to Kenyans under the Big Four Agenda.
According to the Director of Housing at the recently created Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS), Mr Charles Sikuku, 60 percent of the units to be constructed will be under affordable housing with prices ranging between Sh1 million and Sh3 million. The rest will be under market housing.
Mr Sikuku said that 952 units would be under the affordable scheme where 128 units would comprise one-bedroom, 248 units two-bedroom and 576 three-bedroom. The rest, 610 units, would be market housing.
Block 1, with two level basements, is currently at the second floor while Block 2 is at the foundation level. Blocks 3, 4 and 5 are all at excavation level while relocation of the sewer at the estate is already done.
President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the project in June. The redevelopment of the county estate is part of a wider plan that will see similar projects in other city estates to partially meet the high demand for affordable homes.
