Government Denies Low Uptake of its Affordable Houses

The Government has come out strongly to deny that the houses that are being constructed under its ambitious Affordable Housing Program (AHP) have suffered from apathy and low uptake from the targeted groups, contrary to a report in a local daily that appeared to suggest the same.

In a statement, State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed refuted the assertion that government agencies undertaking housing projects were stuck with unsold units.

“The story is not only mischievous but also deliberately misleading”, charged Mohamed.  He said that the newspaper story, that relied on the Auditor General’s report, focused on houses that were designed and executed before the current administration came to power in August 2022. “None of the housing projects listed in the newspaper story falls under AHP”, he stated.

The Kenya Kwanza administration promised to tackle unemployment and housing crises through initiation of affordable housing projects funded through the Housing Levy, a tax that was first introduced in the 2023 before clearing a legal hurdle to become Affordable Housing Act 2024.
