Grace Kagondu Launches bid to Become IEK President

Engineer Grace Muthoni Kagondu has launched her bid to become the next President of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).

Grace, who is currently the first Vice President of the IEK, holds a  B.Sc. (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi and an MBA in Finance and Project Management.

She describes herself as a transformative leader and cites various accomplishments that have contributed to the growth of the engineering profession in Kenya.

As Chair of Capacity Building Committee, she spearheaded growth in local and international professional designations for IEK members including PMP, Solar T1, T2,T3 and AutoCAD, among others. Grace says this has increased the marketability of engineers and the entire engineering sector.

The engineer also initiated the first ever Training Needs Analysis conducted by IEK which resulted in a Training Calendar that is aligned to the specific needs of members.

If elected, she will take over from Eng. Erick Ohaga at a time when professionals in the construction industry are in the spotlight over what critics say is abdication of duty in cases where building structures collapse over issues of structural integrity. However, Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has defended engineers, saying they are not involved in any malpractices, and that it is developers and contractors who fail to engage them or heed their advice in a bid to save on construction costs.

Engineer Shammah Kiteme is also running for the same position.
