Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital, has officially been launched. The 650-bed capacity national referral hospital was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking during the event, the president hailed board chairperson Prof Olive Mugenda for her commitment to making the hospital a reality.
The hospital eases pressure on the country’s main referral hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital, which has for decades been the only major national public medical facility. It is equipped to offer services in oncology, trauma and orthopedics among other specialised areas.
The president also laid a foundation stone at the proposed Integrated Molecular Imaging Centre.
In 2011, Kenya signed a Sh9.85 billion concession loan with Chinese Export Import (Exim) Bank to fund the construction of Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital at the University’s Kahawa Campus. Initial projections had put completion date as 2015.
