Nairobi County has announced it will begin auctioning properties whose owners have defaulted on land rates, in a major revenue recovery drive. The county is targeting over 200,000 properties with unpaid rates, amounting to more than KSh 54 billion.
Only about 50,000 of the estimated 250,000 registered parcels in the city are up to date on rate payments. The county says the auctions will proceed under the National Rating Act No. 15 of 2024, which grants legal authority to repossess and sell properties for rate defaults.
Final notices have already been sent to thousands of defaulters, and the county has initiated legal processes to secure court orders for auction and place caveats on properties. The administration maintains that the crackdown is necessary to ensure fairness and restore critical revenue needed for essential services like health, infrastructure, and water supply.
Property owners have been warned to settle their dues immediately to avoid public auction, with the county stating that no further notice will be issued.
