Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchuma Murkomen has downplayed concerns that the proposed Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway will spell doom for the SGR as cargo movement shifts back to road.

“I am Cabinet Secretary for both Road and Rail and there is no way the government will prioritize one over the other”, Murkomen was quoted as saying by the Daily Nation.

The 6-lane expressway, which is expected to cut road travel time from Nairobi to Mombasa to just 4.5 hours will be 440 kilometres long. The deal to construct the toll road was recently signed between KeNHA and US-based Everstrong Capital. The project has been named Usahihi and will be complete by 2029. It will cost approximately Ksh 473 billion.
