Nairobi Residents React to KeNHA Road Closure Notice

Commuters who use Mombasa Road, Bunyala Road and adjacent roads have criticized the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for closing a section of Uhuru Highway near the Bunyala Road round-about for nearly three weeks. They took to social media to air their disapproval of the extended closure with some noting that the traffic was already bad enough prior to this move.

“I will come back to the city once the (Nairobi) Expressway has been completed”, said an individual by the name Lee Rosasi on Twitter. Another unhappy user on the same platform by the name Masta Tunechi retorted: “Some countries do this over one weekend”.

Last Saturday, KeNHA announced closure of a small section on Uhuru Highway up to 29th April 2021 “to pave way for the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway along Mombasa Road.”

Work on the Nairobi Expressway has been going on uninterrupted for several months now with substantial progress clearly visible. It is expected that most of the road will be complete by the end of the year ahead of the initial announced completion date of 2022.

The Kes 62 billion project is a Build, Operate and Transfer arrangement that will see the Chinese financier operate the toll road for 30 years to recoup their money before handing back to the Kenya government.
