Commuters have reason to celebrate after the government of Kenya secured funding to dual the Eastern Bypass, a key link road linking Mombasa Road with Thika Highway. The Ksh 2 billion loan was secured last month but has only come to light.

The road, designed during the Grand Coalition Government back in 2013 was expected to significantly improve the flow of traffic in Nairobi by diverting traffic from the city and also help residents in adjacent areas commute faster. But it eventually posed a problem with constant nightmarish traffic and accidents from reckless motorists reported frequently.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia previously said that dualling of the Eastern Bypass should have been done from day one. “They should not have done that road without dualling it.”

The dualling of the road is part of 11 infrastructure projects that the Kenyan government delegation showcased to global investors during the two-day Belt and Road Forum for International Co-operation in Beijing, China, in May 2017.

Other projects were the expansion of the Southern and Northern bypasses. The Western Bypass is also at an advanced stage. All these other bypasses are dual-carriage.
