Stecol Corporation to Commence Kiambu Road Dualling After Contract Signing

Kiambu Road

The long-awaited dualling of Kiambu Road has moved a step closer to reality following the official signing of an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

The agreement was signed at Transcom House in Nairobi in the presence of Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, marking a key milestone for one of the capital’s most critical transport corridors.

The 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road Project will be undertaken by Stecol Corporation, a firm with experience in large-scale road infrastructure projects across Africa. The project is expected to transform the heavily congested Kiambu Road corridor into a dual carriageway, significantly improving traffic flow between Nairobi and Kiambu County.

Also present at the signing ceremony was Silas Kinoti, Director General of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), alongside senior government officials and representatives from Stecol Corporation.

Once completed, the upgraded corridor is expected to ease chronic traffic congestion experienced by thousands of daily commuters, particularly during peak hours. The road serves as a vital link between Nairobi’s northern suburbs—including Muthaiga—and the rapidly growing satellite towns of Kiambu and Ndumberi.

The project had previously faced delays due to environmental concerns, particularly regarding its initial impact on Karura Forest, one of Nairobi’s most important green spaces.

Earlier plans proposed the excision of approximately 51.64 acres of the forest to accommodate the expansion. However, the Environment and Land Court intervened, ruling that only 0.1233 hectares could be utilized for the project. This decision effectively overturned consent that had been granted by the Kenya Forest Service.

The ruling was seen as a significant win for environmental conservation while still allowing the project to proceed within stricter ecological limits.
