Who is Eng. Shammah Kiteme, new IEK President?

Eng. Shammah Kiteme was recently elected President of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) for a term of two years. The engineer, who is well known for his regular contributions on the profession in the media, takes over from Eng. Erick Ohaga.

But who is Eng. Kiteme? According to the IEK, Eng. Kiteme is a registered Consulting Engineer (EBK) and a Certified Project Management Professional (Project Management International – USA). He is an accomplished Civil/Structural Engineer with more than 15 years’ experience in Structural Engineering and Waste Water Treatment in Kenya and other African countries.

Eng. Kiteme has been a leader in the Engineering sector from development of technical standards and specifications to reviews. He is a member of the National Committee on Implementation of Eurocodes. He was also a member of the National Committee on finalization of the new Building Code which was published in March.

In 2018, the Engineer was elected as Council Member of the IEK, a position he occupied for two terms. In 2022, he was elected Honorary Secretary. He was instrumental in the delivery of two strategic plans for the IEK, 2019-2023 and 2024-2029.

Eng. Kiteme also chairs a committee on Construction Working Group under the Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO).

The Engineer is considered a thought leader in Engineering and Infrastructure issues and has presented papers locally and internationally.
