Date Set for Architectural Awards

This year’s AAK Awards of Excellence in Architecture will be held on 29th February 2024.

The annual awards celebrate outstanding work in architecture, rewarding architects and projects that stand out under various parameters. According to AAK, the aim is to foster a sense of pride and accomplishment within the architectural community.   

Entries are still open and registration of projects can be done here.  The categories are:

1.     Best African (re)presentation

Submissions under this category are those that well represent our local livelihoods, traditions, history and/or national heritage. Meanings can be abstracted from local artefacts, practices, textures and patterns. It must also exhibit thought and relevance to our region.

2.     Best Interior Environment

Submissions under this category must relay creative design for indoor space. The entries must add value to the space in terms of layout, ambience and comfort in a unique way through spatial arrangement, furniture, lighting and ventilation, textures and colours.

3.     Best Landscape Architecture

Submissions under this category must showcase thoughtful design and implementation of an outdoor space from a micro-planning level to an urban planning stage. It can showcase deliberate use of wayfinding principles, universal access and measures for human comfort and safety while outdoors.

4.     Best Empowerment & Social Equity Through Design

Submissions in this category must exhibit thoughtful design consideration taking into account the vulnerable groups and marginalized communities, including PWD, through innovative solutions that enhance livelihoods, accessibility, and participation in societal activities.

5.     Best Student/Graduate Award

Submissions in this category must be conceptual projects from students currently enrolled in a University offering architecture or landscape architecture in East Africa or fresh graduates (one year). It must showcase innovative use of design principles, be sustainable and have value addition to a specific site context.

Architects in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda are eligible.

The jurists this year are Fawaz Bisher (Kenya),  Jacqueline Namayanja (EAIA President) and  Sherif Morgan (Egypt).
