Eastern Bypass Dualling: Motorists Delighted But Raise Safety Issues

The newly-expanded Eastern bypass that links Mombasa Road with Thika Highway has largely eliminated the traffic congestion that was a common feature along the 27-km road. However, motorists have raised concern about what they see as design flaws on some sections. Citing sharp u-turns and meandering lane markings, they say the road may pose danger to users if not rectified.

A businessman who runs a hardware shop near Kangundo Road intersection said: “We are very grateful that the government has finally dualled this road. However, we are concerned by the design of the many u-turns. The road is also not fully marked and lighting is not complete.”

The expanded bypass was opened by outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta at the end of July as part of a project-launch blitz that the Head of State embarked on during his final days in office.
