Homa Bay Lakefront Redevelopment on Track

Homa Bay

The Homa Bay lakefront, once an underutilised and largely neglected swamp, is steadily being reclaimed and repositioned into a vibrant, integrated economic zone anchored on the redevelopment of the Homa Bay Pier.

The initiative is transforming the facility into a modern feeder port and a strategic hub for Lake Victoria’s blue economy, positioning Homa Bay as an increasingly important node for trade, transport, tourism and local livelihoods within the lake basin.

According to the Interior Ministry, which also coordinates government programmes, Phase II of the redevelopment is now about 70 per cent complete. The current phase focuses on delivery of critical port infrastructure.

Ongoing works include construction of modern terminal buildings, warehouses supported by three power houses, a ferry waiting bay, and a permanent office for the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA). The phase also incorporates enhanced security and operational features, among them a pedestrian security check booth and two 32-cubic-metre water storage tanks intended to strengthen port operations and service delivery.

Upon completion, the upgraded pier is expected to significantly enhance maritime activity on Lake Victoria while supporting economic growth in the wider Homa Bay region.
