Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has decried the absence of women in top leadership positions within his Ministry. Speaking at Barabara Plaza in Nairobi during a forum dubbed Women in Construction, Mr Murkomen noted that all the three roads agencies, KERRA, KURA and KENHA were headed by men.
The Cabinet Secretary said his Ministry was committed to working towards gender equality in the workplace.
“We cannot pretend to build the country when more than 50 percent of the population is represented by only 3 percent,” said Mr Murkomen in an apparent reference to revelations that only 3 percent of artisans in the construction industry are women.
Mr Murkomen promised to change the situation during his term. “I also hope that when my term is over, my successor will be a woman, he added.
The theme of the one-day event was Female-led, Female-built, Female powered.
