New Building Code to Address Current Challenges in Construction

The National Construction Authority (NCA) is looking forward to the repeal of the 1968 Building Code which it says is static and outdated, Executive Director Eng. Maurice Akech has said.

Eng. Akech said the new law that had been drafted was responsive and took cognizant of changes in materials and technologies. He said that the new code instead outlined the expected performance of materials used. It also laid emphasis on sustainability, hazard-resilient designs, safety and well-being of the environment within which construction is being undertaken.

Speaking on a local TV show, Eng. Akech, who is also the Registrar of Contractors, said his organization was also giving technical experience more weight in evaluating new contractor applications.

โ€œWe are giving technical capacity 70% while financial capability and others take 30%โ€, he said.

Eng. Akech revealed that the NCA had also enhanced site compliance inspections and now had a police unit working with its enforcement unit. โ€œPenalties for violations and non-compliance have also been enhancedโ€, he added.
