The collapse of a 10-storey apartment building under construction in Roysambu last Sunday was caused by the use of “poor structural concrete”.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) said preliminary assessment of the failure points pointed to concrete deficiency.
In a statement signed by Executive Director Eng. Maurice Akech, the NCA promised a detailed investigation to unearth more details on the cause of the collapse.
According to the Authority, the project was duly registered by the NCA and was intended to be a 12-storey residential building. All the necessary Nairobi County approvals and NEMA licence had been submitted.
The statement went ahead to disclose the names of the developer, architect, engineer, quantity surveyor and contractor.
Cases of buildings collapsing while under construction are common in Kenya. In the Roysambu incident, no injuries were reported but a neighbouring building and Kenya Power lines were affected.
