Progress on the proposed Matuga Greenfield Clinker Plant in Kwale County is continuing, with Bamburi Cement’s leadership team recently visiting the project site to review developments and engage with key stakeholders.
Led by CEO Geoffrey Ndugwa, the team visited the proposed 1.6 million-tonne-a-year clinker plant site at Diani Estate and held discussions with representatives of the National Administration and Kwale County Government, who reaffirmed their support for the project.
A significant focus of the visit was the ongoing resettlement and livelihood restoration process involving the Mwachome Project Affected Persons (PAPs). Bamburi’s leadership engaged with the Mwachome PAPs Committee and visited the resettlement and livelihood restoration areas to assess progress.
The company said the engagements reaffirmed its commitment to responsible resettlement aligned with World Bank best practices, while maintaining transparent collaboration with affected communities and government partners.
The visit concluded with a commemorative tree planting at the proposed plant site, which Bamburi described as a symbol of its commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible development and shared value creation.
Bamburi Cement signed a US$250 million (about Ksh32 billion) Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract with Sinoma CBMI Construction Co., Ltd last year for the turnkey clinkerisation factory.
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to incorporate advanced, carbon-neutral technologies aimed at reducing its environmental impact. It forms part of Bamburi’s strategy to more than double its clinker production capacity from 1 million tonnes to 2.6 million tonnes annually and increase cement production capacity from 1.8 million tonnes to 4 million tonnes.
The Matuga project is expected to strengthen Bamburi’s long-term clinker self-sufficiency while supporting Kenya’s growing demand for cement and other construction materials.
